Are you recently divorced and being told you are responsible for your ex-spouse’s debt?

Does this sound like you?
Are you recently divorced and being told you are responsible for your ex-spouse’s debt? Are you not going to be able to afford the debts on top of your monthly expenses? What should you do?

What can you do?
Only those who have co-signed a spouse’s debt will be held responsible for it. If you are a co-signor of the debt, you have basically promised that the debt will be paid in full, and you must make sure it is taken care of. If you are not a co-signor, you will not be held responsible for the debt. If you are being harassed for the debt and do not believe you are responsible, forward all mail to your ex, or write “return to sender” on the envelope. If you are still having trouble, contact a professional. To find help with your situation, click here.
